Information Technology (IT) BTEC level 3 (Certificate, Extended Certificate or Diploma) at Rosedale College

Course description

This qualification is designed for learners who are interested in a basic introduction into the study of Information Technology (IT) alongside other fields of study, with a view to progressing to a wide range of higher education courses, not necessarily in IT.

Course content

The core units studied are: Creating Systems to manage information; -Using Social Media in Business. In addition to this, the units below are a sample of some of the optional units you could study: Planning and Management of Computing Projects; Software Design and Development Project; Computer Modelling and programming; Website development.

Entry requirements

Students must have achieved a minimum of 5 A*- C grades or the equivalent at GCSE, including a grade C in GCSE English and Mathematics. Also students need to have achieved a grade C at GCSE Information Technology (IT) or a pass grade or above in Certificate in Digital Applications [CiDA).


The new BTEC Nationals in Information Technology use a combination of assessment styles to give students confidence they can apply their knowledge to succeed in the workplace - and have the study skills to continue learning throughout their career. There are free different ways the course is assessed as of 2016: ASSIGNMENTS - this is where students complete a series of tasks set in a work-related scenario which is set and marked by The Rosedale Hewens Academy Trust. TASKS - students complete in controlled conditions, a task tackling an everyday challenge; some tasks also draw on pre-released information this is set and externally marked by Pearson. This task is submitted electronically. WRITTEN EXAMINATIONS - Students draw on essential information to respond to a task set by Pearson - this is externally marked.

Future opportunities

When taken alongside other Level 3 qualifications such as A Levels, this qualification gives learners the opportunity to progress to higher education to study a BTEC Higher National in information technology, a degree in an information technology discipline or a degree where information technology related skills and knowledge may be advantageous, such as business studies. This qualification carries LICAS points and is recognised by higher education providers as meeting admission requirements for many relevant courses. As the content is equivalent in size to one and a half A Levels, higher education representatives have confirmed that it is appropriate to allow learners to choose their optional units from a wide range so that they can explore their own choice of areas for further study. The qualification supports entry to, for example; HNC in Interactive Media, FdSC in Business Computing, HNO in Engineering, BSc (Hons) in Information Management for Business, BA (Hons) in Accounting and Finance, BSc (Hons) in Information Management for Business Some university courses may require the achievement of specific units and learners should always check the entry requirements for degree programmes with specific higher education providers. The qualification, when studied with other Level 3 qualifications, is aimed at progression to higher education but also enables learners to develop knowledge and skills needed for entry-level roles related to IT including vocational apprenticeship roles and trainee/ entry-level roles in software development, web/ content development, mobile apps design, games design, programming and IT/ business analysis support.
