Classical Civilisation AS/A2 Level at Chichester High School for Girls
The AS course allows you to study the history, politics andliterature of two ancient societies. Unit 1 will be a study ofthe political development of ancientAthens from the sixthcentury BC and how the world’s first democracy operatedin practice. Unit 2 will involve the study of the causes, eventsand impact of the Second PunicWar fought by Rome andCarthage between 221 and 201 BC.
Together, these twounits will give you a firm grounding in some of the mostpivotal moments in ancient history, and equip you with theskills necessary to analyse ancient literature and itsusefulness as historical evidence.
At A2, you will study two iconic historical figures who arecrucial for our understanding of the ancient world. Unit 3will involve the critical study of the career of a man widelyregarded as the first of the Roman Emperors; AugustusCaesar. You will use your understanding of contemporaryRoman values and the ancient sources to evaluate differentaspects of Augustus’ career between 44 BC and AD 14. InUnit 4 you will adopt a critical approach to the ancientevidence to evaluate the policies, reforms and actions ofAlexander the Great between 336 and 323 BC.
As at AS,you will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate criticalthought and analytical skills in answering source-based andessay-style questions. On successful completion of the fullA-Level course you will have an excellent foundation in thehistory, literature, politics and values of ancient Greek andRoman societies.

Unit 3:Augustus and the Foundation of the Principate
5 GCSEs at grade C or above with a grade B in English.
