Physical Education at The Burgate School and Sixth Fom centre

Course description

The A level PE course will encourage students to immerse themselves in the world of sports and PE with the chance to perform or coach a sport (through the non-exam assessment component), and delve into the how and why of physical activity and sport.

Students will receive a well-rounded and full introduction to the world of PE, sport and sports science. This complete grounding in the subject provides a fantastic base from which to build when they move on to higher education, employment or further training.

Course content

The course is divided in to four components:

  1. Physiological factors Affecting Performance
  2. Psychological Factors Affecting Performance
  3. Socio-cultural and Contemporary Issues
  4. Performance within Physical Education.

This new A-Level course will be fully linear so assessment of a student’s knowledge and understanding of the whole course takes place at the end of two years of study.

Entry requirements

  • Grade B in GCSE Physical Education or Science.
  • To be actively involved in Sport outside of school to a good standard.


Component 1, 2 and 3 are worth a combined total of 70% and will be assessed through formal examination.

Component 4 is worth 30% and will be internally assessed and externally moderated.

Future opportunities

A Level PE is a stepping stone towards a career in: teaching, coaching, sports development, sports science, diet & nutrition, sports therapy, physiotherapy, sports psychology and many more.
