Music A Level at Holy Family Catholic School

Course description

The Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Advanced GCE in Music is 100% externally assessed, and consists of one written paper and two non-examined assessment components. This qualification will support students in forming personal and meaningful relationships with music through the development of musical knowledge, understanding and skills, including performing, composing and appraising. Students will be encouraged to engage critically and creatively with a wide range of music and musical contexts, develop an understanding of the place of music in different cultures and contexts, and reflect on how music is used in the expression of personal and collective identities.

Course content

Component 1 – Performing Content - Approaches to performing.

Component 2 - Composing Content - Approaches to composing.

Component 3 – Appraising Knowledge and understanding of musical elements, contexts and language. Application of knowledge through the context of six areas of study, each with three set works.

 

Entry requirements

GCSE Average 5.5. GCSE Music grade B.

Assessment

Component 1: A public performance of one or more pieces, performed as a recital. Externally Assessed 30% of A Level.

Component 2: Two compositions one to a set brief and one free composition. Two technical studies (Chorale writing) Externally Assessed 30% of A Level.

Component 3: 2 hour written exam 40% of A Level.

Future opportunities

This qualification will allow students to develop particular strengths and interests, encourage lifelong learning and provide access to higher education and university degree courses in music and music-related subjects, as well as music-related and other careers.
