Course description

On the course, you will photograph a wide range of topics and environments, using both digital and darkroom-based techniques. You will study camera operation, a range of styles of photography and the work of other photographers. Visits are arranged to a number of galleries. You will produce a themed extended project in response to an externally set brief, demonstrating your ability to research, develop ideas and link your work in a meaningful way to related work of other artists and photographers.

This course combines well with other A-levels in Media, Government and Politics, Sociology, History, English Literature and Language.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs, grade C or above, including English Language and Maths. All applicants will be interviewed.

Assessment

Controlled Assessment at the end of each year. A minimum of a D grade is needed at AS Level to progress onto year 2 of the course. Your final grade will solely be calculated from the results in your final papers.

Future opportunities

Where will this course take you? Our students successfully apply for degrees in Photography and other Creative Arts. The starting salary for a Media Photographer is around £18,640pa. Other employment opportunities include: teaching, Film/Video Editor, Fine Artist, Medical Illustrator, Press Photographer and Television Camera Operator.

Further information

You will learn in dedicated photography classrooms, studios and darkrooms and computer workshops, equipped with industry standard software packages and equipment. There are three AS or A2 classroom sessions per week and they fit in with your overall programme of study, usually across five days at college.
