Music AS at Hayes School
AS/A2 Music builds on the skills developed in GCSE Music: performing, composing, and listening. Fluent reading and writing of conventional musical notation is essential. For AS performances students will need to play or sing pieces of at least a Grade 5 difficulty. Course content Students study extracts of music from two Areas of Study, looking into their style, structure, compositional techniques and historical background. At least one of the Areas of Study will be from the Western classical tradition. They will learn to identify musical characteristics from a wide range of styles both through listening and by studying musical scores. Compositional techniques such harmonising a melody will be studied, alongside the development of students’ own creative compositional skills. Solo and ensemble performance is required throughout the course. Exam: 70% (40% performing, 30% listening and analysis) Coursework: 30% Dates: Coursework to be completed by the Easter of Year 12. Exams: May/June of Year 12.

With further training, you could go into a job related to Music such as a Music Composer, Musician, Sound Technician or you may wish to use your music ability for recreational purposes. You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Music, which could lead onto higher education to study Music related courses or more general higher education courses. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will provide you with the skills, understanding and knowledge to access a music related career or seek employment in lots of other industries.
