Electrical Installation Level 1 Diploma at Platinum Training

Course description

The Electrical Installation Level 1 Diploma is ideal for students who want to gain knowledge and experience in the construction trade. It gives a basic overview of all aspects involved in becoming an Electrician, allowing students to experience both trades.

Training takes place over 8 hours per week working towards the Electrical Installation Diploma and 4 hours working on Employability and Functional Skills.

The vocational course consists 50% practically and 50% theoretically.

Students will also gain a Health & Safety certificate and CSCS card.  

Students will also complete a Work Placement as part of the course, allowing them to experience first hand what life is like working in the industry.

Course content

The Electrical Installation Level 1 Diploma includes training in:

  • Health and Safety
  • Tools and Equipment
  • Electrical Science
  • Fabrication techniques
  • Soldering

Students also complete Functional Skills in Maths, English and ICT at varying levels depending on previous qualification and ability level. Students can be expected to be challenged to achieve as high a qualification as they can.

The course also includes work preparation skills and a work experience placement to experience a work environment.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements on the course, just a good positive attitude and willingness to learn.


Assessment on Vocational Qualifications is carried out by practical assessment, portfolio and formal examinations throughout the course.

Assessment on Functional Skills qualifications is carried out via formal examination with learners pushed to achieve as high a level as they can to help with their progression onto further study or apprenticeships.

Financial information

Weekly travel payments are paid into student's bank accounts on a weekly basis to cover the cost of a weekly bus pass.

Further finiancial help and support is available and will be discussed on an individual basis dependant on individual student needs.

All students are also provided with their own boots and overalls (PPE) once they join the course.

Future opportunities

After completing a Level 1 Diploma, students have a number of possible progression routes to continue on their journey to becoming fully qualified:

  • Further college study

Students can apply to complete a Level 2 at college and then move on to a Level 3 to become fully qualified in Electrical Installation

  • Apprenticeship

Platinum offer their own Apprenticeships at Level 2 and Level 3. This allows students to continue to learn in a classroom environment once a week and learn through on the job training in a workplace whilst picking up a weekly wage.

    • The Wilson Road Training Centre houses both the Functional and Employability Skills Department and the Construction Skills Department.

      The site includes a new Electrical Installation Workshop and a new Plumbing Workshop, ideal for students keen to begin the journey into a construction trade.
