Agriculture - Level 2 or 3 Apprenticeship at Askham Bryan College

Course description

Work-based learning and assessment at your place of work with some college-based study. Learners must be in a paid work placement to commence an apprenticeship programme, and would usually enter at the Level 2 Apprenticeship stage before progressing to the Level 3.  


Course content

Three Pathways:

• Mixed farming

• Livestock production

• Crop production


Course Themes*

• Livestock welfare

• Harvesting operations

• Crop establishment and monitoring of crops

• Estate skills

• Monitor and cultivate sites for planting crops

• Vegetation monitoring and control

• Storage, condition and harvesting of crops

• Breeding of livestock

• Routine animal husbandry

• Mechanically-controlled livestock production environment

• English and maths (where applicable)

*Course themes will be relevant to chosen pathway and also dependent on apprenticeship course level.  


Opportunities exist to take additional specialist qualifications such as tractor driving, forklift truck driving, ATV training, safe use of veterinary medicines, but charges will apply.

Entry requirements

Level 2 Apprenticeship: Level 1 Maths and English equivalent to GCSE grade 2 (old GCSE grade E) or above, plus suitable and relevant employment and will be expected to work towards Level 2 Maths and English where this has not been achieved.

Level 3 Apprenticeship: Usually a Level 2 work-based qualification (Intermediate Apprenticeship) or considerable work experience, plus suitable employment. Applicants must be capable of achieving, or have achieved, Level 2 Maths and English.

Future opportunities

Further study:

Move from a Level 2 to a Level 3 study programme.

A degree level course such as the Foundation Degree in Agriculture could lead to a career in farm management or management in an associated industry.


Many learners remain with their employer in roles such as operatives or supervisors and with further study you could move into management.
