Fine Art A Level at Newton Abbot College

Course description

The Fine Art A Level course offers a wide range of artistic experiences: drawing, acrylic painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, film, fine arts mixed media and life drawing.

Course content

During the first year students are required to produce a portfolio containing a project and examples of fine art work such as painting, drawing, mixed media, sculpture, installation, printmaking, film and photography.

During the second year of study, students will be expected to undertake a Personal Investigation Project based on an idea, issue, concept or theme created into a practical project, supported by a 1000-3000-word essay. The exam is a practical project taken in the Summer Term.

In addition to College-based study, each year students visit exhibitions locally, in London and participate in a four day European Study trip.

Entry requirements


Students must have achieved a minimum of Grade 4 or above in both English and Mathematics and Grade C (equivalent) in at least 3 other GCSE/Level 2 qualifications.


C Grade (equivalent) or above in a Level 2 Art related qualification.


Future opportunities

Students wishing to pursue a career in the Art and Design Industry usually undertake a Foundation Course, followed by a Degree Course. A Foundation Course lasts for one year and students can enrol in a college in the local area. During Foundation Courses, students will learn many new art and design skills and build up a portfolio of work that can be taken along to desired Degree Course interviews.

Students apply for Degree Courses during Foundation Courses; there are many different courses all over the country to choose from. Studying AS or A2 Art can lead to a Foundation Course in Art & Design and ultimately onto a range of university degree courses and careers as:
