Drama and Theatre Studies AS/A Level at Hazelwick School

Course description

This course is designed to encourage you to explore the world through theatre; to share your view of the world with different audiences and experience a wide range of theatrical productions.

If you enjoy performing, directing, stage design or technical theatre & if you engage in theatre texts & performance, then this is the course for you.

Course content

Component 1 Devising - you will explore an extract of performance text, in light of a practitioner.  You will then devise a performance based on this 4extract as a performer or designer.  You will record the process in a portfolio.

Component 2  Text in Performance - as a group you will present an extract of a text as a performer or designer.  You will also perform monolgue or duologue from a different text.

Component 3 Theatre Makers in Practice - You will practically explore a set text & write about how you will bring an unseen extract of the text to life.  You will also write an evaluation of a pice of live theatre you have seen as part of the course.

Entry requirements

Grade 6 in English Language or English Literature & a B in Drama (if taken)


Component 1 (40% of A level) internally assessed by your teachers & externally moderated.

Component 2 (20% of A level) externally assessed by a visiting examiner.

Component 3 (40% of A level) answering questions based on your own director's interpretatiion of a second set text. Written examination.

Future opportunities

Students have gone on to obtain places at Drama Schools such as the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, the Royal Central School of Speech & Drams and East 15. 

Students leave the school with independence, resilience & a strong work ethic going onto form their own theatre companies and work for top live music production companies.
