Course description

What will I study?
• Cells, exchange and transport: cell structure, cell membranes, cell diversity and cellular organisation, exchange surfaces and breathing, transport in animals and plants
• Molecules, biodiversity, food and health: biological molecules, nucleic acids and enzymes, diet and food production, health & disease, biodiversity, classification, evolution and maintaining biodiversity
• Practical tasks and experiments
• Communication and homeostasis: communication, nerves and hormones
• Excretion
• Photosynthesis
• Respiration
• Cellular control and variation: cellular control, meiosis and variation
• Biotechnology and gene technologies: cloning in plants and animals, biotechnology, genomes and gene technologies
• Ecosystems and sustainability: ecosystems, populations and sustainability
• Responding to the environment: plant responses, animal responses and animal behaviour

Entry requirements

You must have GCSE Maths at grade B or above or an equivalent qualification and a B in a GCSE Science qualification and a good reference. All applicants must take an entry test and have an interview to confirm that an intensive programme is appropriate. For applicants aged under 19 a two year A-Level programme will normally be recommended. However, applicants aged 18 will be considered for the intensive course if they already have a proven record of achievement at advanced level.
