Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector Level 1 at Sunderland College

Course description

This course is for people with a genuine interest in hairdressing who would like to get started towards a career in the industry.

Course content

The course provides an introduction to the hair and beauty sector including:

  • Shampoo and conditioning
  • Styling men’s hair
  • Styling women’s hair
  • Creating an image using colour
  • Colouring hair with temporary colour
  • Scalp massage
  • The art of dressing hair
  • Reception duties

Entry requirements

You will need to have one GCSE at grade G or above and pass an assessment of dexterity and skills.


You will be assessed through a number of practical activities, course work and a file of evidence. Practical assessments will be on a model head, working on each other and sometimes clients. Your IT skills will also be developed through this course.

Future opportunities

After successfully completing the course you could go on to look for employment in the industry or move on to a Level 2 Diploma in Women’s Hairdressing or Barbering.
