Further Mathematics Edexcel AS Level at Poynton High School
Further Mathematics could be a stand-alone qualification but is usually studied with Mathematics. It is taught alongside A Level Mathematics in Year 12 with additional classes. In Year 13 it is studied in completely separate groups. It is suitable for students who are looking towards further study in science, engineering, or Mathematics. Further Mathematics is a very highly regarded qualification and is essential for students looking to study related subjects at prestigious universities. Although historically seen as a qualification for only the most able mathematicians, AS Further Mathematics is useful for students aiming at a higher education qualification with any mathematical content whatsoever, in order to better prepare them for the mathematics involved.
AS Level Further Mathematics:
Students study C1, C2 and D1 in their Mathematics lessons, and in addition study Further Pure 1 (FP1), S1 and M1 in their Further Mathematics lessons.
- FP1 Summation of series; proof by induction; coordinate systems; complex numbers; matrices; numerical methods.
- S1 and M1 – see the Mathematics page
- C1 and C2 are exclusive to AS Mathematics, FP1 is exclusive to Further Mathematics. The applied modules will be combined with either of the qualifications to give the best overall score in both qualifications.
The Further Mathematics group is usually quite small so it allows for a lot of individual attention. In Year 13 the Further Mathematics class study as a separate group. There are a range of options for combining Mathematics and Further Mathematics, including studying AS Further Mathematics in Year 13. The school has developed links with the Further Mathematics Support Network and other local schools. Support is offered for students who wish to take the STEP qualification or the Oxford entrance examination.
- 5 grade Cs or above at GCSE level, including an A or above in Mathematics.
All modules are equally weighted and are assessed by a 90 minute examination
AS modules: Further Pure 1 and two applied modules
Further Mathematics is an essential qualification for students who wish to study Mathematics at University. It enables the most able of students to meet concepts and techniques in Mathematics for the first time that would otherwise not be encountered until their degree course. In addition, Further Mathematics students consistently excel in their Mathematics GCE because of the crossover of study.
