BTEC Sport Development Coaching & Fitness Level 3 Extended Diploma at Balby Carr Community Academy

Course description


This qualification is the equivalent of three full ‘A’ levels. Students will study 19 units, full time over a period of two years.

These units will range from:

  • Sports Psychology
  • Sports Coaching
  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Fitness Training and Programming

A number of vocational courses that are work related and practically based will run alongside the BTEC Extended Diploma. Students will be involved in studying a sport qualification which is combined with specific leadership courses. In addition students will be involved in a work placement which will allow students to put the skills they have learnt into practice.


Alongside this qualification students will also work within an Academy area of their choice developing skills and qualities which are paramount to gaining a career in sport or even becoming a professional athlete. Students also have the opportunity to complete the following all of which are externally assessed

  • Community Sports Leader Award
  • Higher Sports Leader Award
  • Sports Coach UK Courses
  • Emergency First Aid Course

In addition students have the option to take numerous National Governing Body Awards

Entry requirements

Students are required to have six GCSE “passes” at Grade C or above, normally including:

  • Science
  • English
  • Mathematics

This programme is not suitable for students who are only interested in taking part in sport and games. This programme is suitable for students who enjoy Physical Education and Sport and are interested in sport related studies. The most important requirements for this course are:

  • Enthusiasm to learn
  • Commitment to the programme
  • A willingness to try new and different things


This course is internally assessed using a variety of different methods. From presentations, video logs, coursework to podcasts and creating brochures. Teachers will choose the most appropriate method for assessing their students according to the needs of their class.

Future opportunities

This course, acts as an excellent progression into Higher Education in sport related studies in the UK or scholarship routes overseas. Students who study this programme may go onto a number of careers. The most common are:

  • Fitness Instructor
  • Lifeguard
  • Personal Trainer
  • Teacher
