English Language and Literature A level at Sir Bernard Lovell School

Course description

The specification encourages students to develop their interest in and enjoyment of English Literature, and to build on their GCSE study of English Language. The course requires students to study prose, poetry and drama. They will also study an anthology of texts based around the theme of ‘Paris’ which will also provide the stimulus for ‘recreative writing’. For AS Level all final assessment takes place in a closed book exam. At A Level one exam is closed book and one open book. Students also complete a teacher assessed assignment.

Future opportunities

English Language and Literature is a highly regarded and established course welcomed by universities. Pupils wishing to study at University Level can use this A-level qualification for entry to undergraduate courses including English, but would be best advised to take either English Literature or English Language or both if they wish to specialise in English for career purposes.
