Sports Studies at Poole Grammar School

Course description

The course put the emphasis on the study of sport as well as the individual’s performance. Students will be expected develop knowledge and understanding of factors that enable them and others to be physically active, as part of a balanced lifestyle and as part of lifelong involvement in an active and healthy lifestyle.

They will develop knowledge and understanding of the relationship between skill, strategy and body and mind readiness in ensuring and efficient performances.

The students will learn how to be involved in physical activity by understanding how they and others make the most of opportunities and pathways available. They will develop understanding of how contemporary products and consumer-focused influences related to physical activity affect and inform young people’s decisions about involvement in physical activity.

The students will tackle the issues and key influences that might limit or encourage young people’s involvement in physical activity.

Students need not just have an interest in sport, but an enquiring mind that is ready to research into sport. They will need to be able to evaluate performances and give reasons for particular sporting displays. Due to the physiological elements of the subject GCSE Biology at least at grade B is desirable.

Students will also need to demonstrate an advanced level of sporting performance. In both AS and A2 practical performance is assessed and this makes up to 40% of the overall mark. Therefore active participation in school teams and outside is almost essential.
