Biology A Level at The Buckingham School - A Sports College
This exciting new course will allow you to develop your interest and enthusiasm for Biology. AS Biology is a stand-alone one year qualification, while the A Level builds on this content. In the AS Level you will study Foundations in Biology, Exchange & Transport, Biodiversity, Evolution and Disease. In the second year you will study Communication, Homeostasis and Energy, Genetics, Evolution and Ecosystems. You will develop a foundation understanding of high level biological concepts and develop effective, practical skills.
Biology has natural links with all the sciences and physical education/sport. It would also support the Level 3 BTEC in Applied Science
We expect you to be keen to learn and to be actively involved in all aspects of the course. You will be keen to work independently on practical tasks in the laboratory.
Students must utilise their free time effectively to ensure they are completing suggested background reading and practising the application of their biological knowledge. We have a sixth form area within the department for students to use during their study periods. Students are expected to meet deadlines and ensure the work they produce is to a consistently high standard.
For A level Biology we require students to have achieved a minimum of a B grade at GCSE in at least two sciences e.g. Core and Additional Science or Triple Science in addition to English and Maths.
Students may go on to study and work in biotechnology, forensic science, agriculture, medicine, marine biology, pharmacology, sports science or dentistry for example. Students may also combine biology with nonscientific subjects.
