Public Services - Level 2 Diploma in Public Services at Wakefield College
Life in the Public Services can be challenging, rewarding, interesting and exciting and you will require a variety of skills, knowledge and expertise to succeed. This course at Wakefield College will help you develop all these qualities and give you an introduction to careers within this sector whilst developing your communications and leadership skills, that are vitally important in all uniformed public service roles.
The course will provide you with an insight into life and work within the different Public Services, including the skills and fitness levels you need, furthering your knowledge of the law, citizenship and other areas, developing leadership and expedition skills and much more.
Maths and English are key elements of any full-time programme of study in College. If you do not already have these GCSE's at grade 9-4 in these subjects, you will need to attend sessions allocated on your timetable. These are varied and designed to cater for all ability levels. You will receive advice and guidance regarding the correct level for you.
Skills in Maths and English will support your full-time course, assisting you with assignment writing, research, job applications, presentations, managing your own finances and interpretation of data, to mention just a few. They will also help you in the future, as most employers are looking for ability in these areas. This is why the development of Maths and English is so important, whatever your field of study.

5 GCSEs 9-3, including English or Maths
There are continuous assessments throughout the course. These consist of projects, presentations, physical demonstrations and written assignments. You may also be required to sit a controlled assessment as part of the course requirements, this will aid and develop your time management and rational thinking skills that will help you in your future career.
Tuition and certification are free if you are aged 16-18 years old. Related additional costs may include materials, equipment, visits, residentials etc which are payable by all students.
Any student entered/registered with an Awarding Body who has been given free entry and then withdraws or is withdrawn by a tutor will incur the certification fee associated with the course. Any resit examination will incur a cost.

With the successful completion of this course, to a Merit standard, you could progress to a BTEC Level 3 qualification in Uniformed Public Services.
You may also progress to other Level 3 courses offered at Wakefield College subject to successful applications.
This course will prepare you with the skills and qualities to progress to a career within a public sector organisation although most of the uniformed Public Services have minimum age requirements, so you will need further experience and training before you can apply. This course is just the first step on your way to a career with organisations such as the Police, Fire Service, Prison Service, Armed Services and many more.
