Double Mathematics and Further Mathematics A level at Havering Sixth Form College

Course description

Double Mathematics consists of AS and A-Level qualifications in both Maths and Further Maths.

Skill in algebra is fundamental to success in this course. As well as Pure Mathematics, there are three areas of Applied Maths, Mechanics, Decision and Statistics.

Course content

The Pure Mathematics which makes up half of the course involves algebra, geometry, trigonometry, graphs, sequences and calculus. Decision Maths deals with large scale business and organisational problems and combines well with Computing, Business Studies and Economics. Mechanics deals with motion and forces and links well with Physics. Statistics includes analysis of data and probability, including evaluating claims based on data.

The mathematics we study is intrinsically fascinating, but also lays the foundations for further study in Mathematics, Computing, Engineering, Statistics, Economics and many other areas.

You can expect to:

  • Widen and deepen your understanding of mathematical concepts
  • Learn and apply a wide range of mathematical techniques
  • Study applications of mathematics to Mechanics, Decision Maths and Statistics
  • Use and interpret Mathematics in modelling situations based on the real world

Entry requirements

One grade B and four grade Cs at GCSE, C Grade English GCSE, A* Grade Maths, Generally high GCSE grades (A* and A) in other subjects. Successful diagnostic test result.

Optional Cost

£3.50 - All students must have their own basic mathematical instruments & up-to-date scientific calculator. Also a graphical calculator is recommended. Revision books available, approx. £3.50

Future opportunities

This course is usually taken by students considering studying Mathematics, Engineering, and Economics etc. at University. Maths graduates have become defence analysts, sporting professionals and sound engineers. Career prospects are excellent.
