Business Level 3 at Warrington & Vale Royal College

Course description

Students completing their BTEC Nationals in Business will be aiming to go on to employment, often via the stepping stone of higher education. The course has been specially developed in close collaboration with experts from professional bodies, businesses and universities. The Foundation Diploma in Business is gained at the end of the first year of a two year level 3 qualification. In the second year you will receive an Extended Diploma which is equivalent to three 'A' levels.

This Extended Diploma can also support learners who wish to go directly into employment in job roles within business or business management and Higher Apprenticeships in the business sector. Learners can also progress onto a university undergraduate course.

Areas of employment include junior business roles in marketing, administration, finance, events management, or human resources.

Course content

The Foundation Diploma is completed in one year full time studying and learners can then progress onto a second year of study to gain the Extended Diploma. The Foundation diploma has 4 mandatory units and a further 2 optional units.

This course includes the following mandatory units;

  • Exploring business
  • Developing a marketing campaign
  • Personal and business finance
  • Managing an event

There are a range of optional units you may wish to complete and you will be part of the decision making as to which ones the group will study. Optional units include;

  • Recruitment and Selection Process
  • Cost and Management Accounting
  • Visual Merchandising
  • Digital Marketing
  • Market Research
  • Employment Law


You will be assessed using a variety of methods including task set and marked by the awarding body, examination and tasks that are set and assessed by your teacher for example, projects, analysis of case studies and presentations.

Financial information

Students will be expected to possess their own portable storage devices. There may be some additional expenditure associated with educational visits. Further details will be available on application.

Future opportunities

The Foundation Diploma is the first year of a two year level 3 qualification. Students who complete the Foundation Diploma usually progress onto the Extended Diploma, however, there are opportunities to move into apprenticeships from this course.

After successfully completing this Extended Diploma, you can progress onto a university qualification at either foundation or undergraduate degree level, either here at the college or other institutions. The qualification carries UCAS points and is recognised by higher education providers as contributing to meeting admission requirements to many relevant courses, for example:

  • BSc (Hons) in Business and Management
  • BA (Hons) and BSc(Hons) in Business Studies
  • BSc (Hons) in International Management
  • HNC/D Business
  • Higher Apprenticeship.

Whilst completing this course, students have a variety of work experience opportunities.

Are there any links with industry?

This is a college based course and your learning will be enhanced by engaging with employers. You will have guest speakers attending the course regularly. You can also involve yourself in work experience opportunities.
