Gateway Entry Level 1 at Heart of Worcestershire College

Course description

Do you enjoy learning in a variety of ways ? Do you like to work at your own pace and need support to help you achieve your goals? If the answer is yes, then this is the course for you!

Our Gateway programme will help you learn the core life skills that you need to develop your personal, social and educational wellbeing. We offer a personalised learning programme built around your own needs and aspirations. It will put you on track to being confident, making your own decisions and living more independently.

This course is designed to fit around your pace of learning and can take up to four years. Learners on the Gateway programme are supported at all times throughout the college day by members of the Learning Support team.

You will study a range of functional skills in English, maths and ICT. We also help you to develop your personal, social and independence skills through classes in citizenship, independent and healthy living, money skills and cookery.

You can choose from a range of vocational subjects such as retail and business studies, environmental awareness, sports and drama, woodwork, catering, art, textiles, horticulture and music. We also work with partnership organisations to offer access to Worcester Snoezelen and the University Gym as part of the wider programme.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements other than a willingness to participate in learning activities. Attending college is about developing your independence skills and life skills more, so we will work with you to make sure you are able to develop your confidence as you make this important transition to adulthood.

Assessment

You will work with your tutor to assess your needs set your own personal targets. You will complete a folder of your work in each subject area, gathering evidence from a variety of innovative assessments methods including computer work, photographic evidence and video. 

Your tutor will mark your work and meet with you to give you feedback.

Future opportunities

Towards the end of each academic year, you will be able to discuss progression opportunities with your tutor. 

You may go on to a higher level course at the end of your studies if you have shown sufficient progression.

      Always dreamed of being on stage? Look no further, our Performing Arts department boasts a professionally equipped theatre in St. Andrews' building with a state-of-the-art computerised lighting system, sound systems and multiple stages and seating positioning, giving you a platform to showcase your talent. As a Performing Arts student you will have the chance to participate in a variety of productions throughout the year. 

      The View

      Feeling peckish? The View is a place for you to grab a coffee, stop for a light snack or sit down for a full meal. It boasts a vast and ever-changing menu of freshly prepared snacks, meals, soups and cakes made by our Chefs and catering students. Looking out over the River Severn, The View is the place in college to meet friends over coffee, relax with a book over cake, or sit down for some enjoyable, wholesome, home-cooked food without any of the effort of cooking or preparing it yourself.

      Starbucks

      Make time for a milky latte and visit our Starbucks counter in The View. We have the only one in Worcester City Centre! So come sit back, warm up and relax with a cappuccino, or even grab a berry frappe to go!

      Nursery

      Our nurseries provide a happy, secure and stimulating place where learning through play is purposeful and fun! Our bright and spacious nurseries offer a wide range of flexible childcare for children aged 3 months to 5 years old. The nurseries are recognised as 'outstanding' by Ofsted who also praised the training received by staff, and the atmosphere that the children enjoy.

      St Dunstan's

      St Dunstan's is a state-of-the-art building dedicated to our creative arts and hair and beauty provision in Worcester. Short-listed for the prestigious AJ Retrofit Awards, this modern building is home to our hair and beauty salon, art and design studios and coffee shop making it the perfect place for students to explore their creative side. Our hair and beauty salon, Fountains is open to members of the public.
