Course content


This BTEC Level 3 qualification, broadly equivalent to one AS or A Level, offers an engaging programme of study consisting of both knowledge-based learning and practical application.  It is suitable for students who feel that a sixth-form education is important, but who might not necessarily be planning to go to university at the end of their sixth form studies.  It is particularly suitable for students who may one day hope to work in the hospitality industry.  

Over the past few years, employment in this sector has increased faster than for the economy overall, although there remains significant skills gaps, particularly in customer service, interpersonal skills, supervisory skills, finance and employability skills.  This qualification supports many of the GCEs and BTECs on offer as well. In line with all other BTECs, it is graded Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction* through the production of 100% coursework.

Successful students will be those who have achieved 5 A*- C GCSEs, have some IT capability, and who will work as part of a team both in, and out of, the classroom environment.



Over 2 years students will study the following units:

• Understanding the Hospitality Industry:  The aim of this unit is to enable learners to gain knowledge and understanding of the hospitality industry, the classification systems and standards used, and the organisation and structure and ownership of hospitality businesses.  Learners will develop an overview of the importance of the hospitality industry within the economy in terms of its scale, diversity and employment opportunities.

• The Principles of Customer Service:  Customer service is of vital importance and a reputation for excellent customer service performance will help hospitality organisations to attract and retain customers by differentiating them from their competitors.  This unit looks at how a supervisor can help to develop customer service in their business, the relationship between customer service and selling and the impact that customer service can have on business performance.

• Providing Customer Service in Hospitality:  The aim of this unit is to enable learners to gain understanding of the role of communication, presentation and teamwork in customer service and the part employees play in retaining existing customers and attracting new ones.

• E-business in Hospitality: This unit enables learners to gain knowledge and understanding of e-business in the hospitality industry, the benefits, impacts and barriers to the development of e-business within hospitality businesses and the relevant features of effective hospitality websites and key sales and marketing issues.

• Food and Drinks Service:  The aim of this unit is to enable learners to gain understanding of the importance of the meal experience in food and drink service operations. It introduces learners to basic concepts of food service and to the skills, knowledge and responsibilities required in food service throughout the sector.  Learners will have the opportunity to relate issues concerning value, quality, skill levels, satisfaction, service and environment to customer expectations in a variety of operations.

• Alcoholic Beverage Service:  This unit enables learners to gain knowledge and understanding of different types of alcoholic beverages by exploring the different types of alcoholic beverage, their origins and ingredients, appropriate matches with food, its storage, equipment and presentation. Learners will also study the issues concerning the sale of alcohol.  Learners will not be allowed to sample any alcoholic beverage.

• Planning and Managing a Hospitality Event: Learners will produce a proposal for an event (likely to be a charity fundraising activity or a themed dinner), plan it, deliver it and review it. It brings together the units already covered.  This is a potentially exciting unit, delivered in Year 13.
