Drama and Theatre Studies at Calder High School

Course description

Welcome, especially if you relish the prospect of spending the next year exploring and performing a variety of entertaining and challenging Advanced Level plays: from naturalistic vision of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, to the Surrealism of Lorca and ‘Blood Wedding’

In this course there are high expectations of each and every student and it is expected that at times of the year you will spend as much time rehearsing in your own time as well as in the lessons.

Course content

AS

Unit 1 (40%) Exploration of Drama and Theatre – A practical exploration of two contrasting plays. Internally assessed

Unit 2 (60%) Theatre text in performance - A group performance plus either a monologue or a duologue performance. Externally assessed

A2

Unit 3 (40%) Exploration of Dramatic Performance - in groups, students must create their own piece of theatre. Internally assessed

Unit 4(60%) Theatre text in Context - written paper. Externally assessed

Entry requirements

A GCSE Grade C or above in both Drama and English or English Literature. (The course contains a significant amount of essay writing)

A willingness to attend a variety of theatrical performances
