Computing at Dereham Sixth Form College

Course description

This course, with its emphasis on abstract thinking, general problem solving, algorithmic and mathematical reasoning, scientific and engineering
based thinking, is a good foundation for further study. This specification has been designed for students who wish to go on to higher education courses or
employment where knowledge of Computing would be beneficial. One can study Computing and go on to a career in Medicine, Law, Business, Engineering or any
type of Science.
The first exams in Computing at the college were taken in 1984. We have a long tradition of sending students to top universities to study computing related degrees. We follow the AQA A specification. A course that provides an excellent broad introduction to Computing. AS In the first year you will study a broad range of topics that embrace both theory and practical aspects.

  • Unit 1: Problem Solving, Programming, Data Representation and Practical Exercise
  • Unit 2: The Computer Components, The Stored Program Concept and The Internet


In the second year you will revisit some topics in
greater depth as well as some new ones alongside
creating a major programming based project.

  • Unit 3: Problem Solving, Programming, Operating Systems, Databases and Networking
  • Unit 4: The Practical Project

Entry requirements

A*-B in Maths GCSE and A*-C in English Language GCSE.
