Chemistry A Level at Derby College

Course description

Chemistry is an important and exciting subject which is widely accepted as an excellent foundation for the world of work and higher education.  This A-level complements many other subjects and is invaluable for higher level qualifications in fields such as medicine and pharmacy.

Course content

At AS Level you will study:

  • Atoms, Bonds and Groups
  • Chains, Energy and Resources
  • Practical Skills in Chemistry

At A2 Level you will study:

  • Rings, Polymers and Analysis
  • Equilibrium, Energetics and Elements
  • Practical Skills in Chemistry

Entry requirements

You need five GCSE passes at grade C or above, including English Language and Mathematics.

Grade B in Chemistry is required if you have studied Triple Sciences or  Grade B is required in both GCSE Core Science and GCSE Additional Science.


Written examinations account for 80% of the final mark while practical skills assessments account for 20%.
