Further Mathematics AS level at St Charles Catholic Sixth Form College
Maths is a stimulating and rewarding course that is highly regarded by universities and employers. Additionally however, studying Further Maths will give you an elite level of numeracy which is a life skill that can have profound positive effects for you.
Having high levels of numeracy:
- Is linked with higher wages
- Will enable you to make sense of charts and information reported in the media
- Have financial capability – For example be able to select the cheapest loan, choose the most appropriate savings and insurance products and budget effectively.
Whereas low levels of Numeracy are shown to have extremely detrimental effects:
- Adults with low levels of numeracy are twice as likely to be unemployed
- Currently 61% of adults lack health numeracy skills – which includes for example the ability to understand risk associated with disease, medicinal dosage and to manage their diet.
You will study 1 Core module, FP1, as well as 2 applied modules on Mechanics, M1 and M2.
These are all calculator modules and they all carry the same weight towards your final grade.
6 GCSE’s including a grade A or A* in GCSE Maths and to be studying or have already passed AS maths.
All modules will be examined at the end of the year.
Each modular exam lasts 90 minutes and is out of 75 marks.
During the year you will have weekly homework and homework test, as well as half-termly “Tracker tests”. For these assessments you will receive a variety of feedback including written, 1-1 verbal and individualized videos.
As well as learning specific mathematical skills and techniques, studying maths also equips you with many transferrable abilities such logic and reasoning skills, being able to break down complex problems into smaller parts and here in the St Charles maths department you will also greatly improve your confidence and teamworking skills.

The Maths Society - Students with a passion for maths are given the opportunity here to explore mathematics outside of the curriculum. They will attend lectures and seminars as well as receive support in applying to the UKs most prestigious universities for maths related degrees.
Extensive support programme – Several weekly workshops led by staff. We also select some of our most successful A2 students to be paid to run workshops and mentor other students.
Multimedia feedback – as well as receiving regular written and 1-1 feedback on your work, in the maths department we also use our ipads to assess students work. This means that you will receive individualised video feedback that will be stored online and available for you to access throughout the year.
