Motor Vehicle Engineering Level 1 Foundation Diploma at Fareham College

Course description

This course provides you with a sound preparation for a career in the motor vehicle industry.

Course content

  • Engine mechanical systems

  • Cooling systems

  • Fuel and exhaust systems

  • Spark ignition systems

  • Electrical systems

  • Braking systems

  • Transmission systems

  • Steering and suspension

  • Wheels and tyres

  • Hand skills and manufacturing techniques

The course will also cover all the health and safety aspects involved in  the maintenance of light vehicles. You will be encouraged to find a work placement to gain garage experience one day a week.

Entry requirements

  • A successful interview.
  • You must be committed and prepared to work hard and have achieved English and Maths at EL3 or above.

Future opportunities

Students will be interviewed for suitability to progress to Level 2 or an apprenticeship. 

You could find a junior trainee position in a garage or auto repair workshop, agricultural machinery repair / maintenance, or Armed Forces (transport). Many students choose to study Level 2 before working in a garage full-time.

The qualification gained is the IMI Diploma in Vehicle Systems Maintenance.
