Business Studies at Highdown School and Sixth Form Centre

Course description


Unit 1 Financing and Planning a business Students will be examined in this unit in the January of the course. Students are provided with an introduction to the scope of Business Studies within the context of starting a new business. Students will also study key financial concepts that are essential for the planning of a small business.

Unit 2 Managing a business In this unit, students will have the opportunity to study topic areas in relation to the theme of improving the effectiveness of a business. Students will study the importance of the management of finance, human relations, making operational decisions, marketing and competitiveness.


Unit 3 Strategies for Success In this unit, students will study topic areas in relation to setting objectives, measuring performance and devising marketing, operational and human resource strategies.

Unit 4 The Business Environment and Managing Change This is a synoptic unit and is designed to use material from all other units on the course. Students will consider the relationship between businesses and external factors. Students will also study how external factors impact upon businesses, and the strategic management of businesses including leadership and corporate culture.

Entry requirements

Grade C in Business Studies.
