Health Level 3 Apprenticeship at Somerset College

Course description

This Apprenticeship is for those looking to start a career in the Health sector, and allows you to earn while you learn and gain a qualification. The programme will be mainly delivered in your work placement; however you will be required to attend college two days per month.

The course will cover the following core units:

  • The role of the health and social care worker 
  • Engage in personal development in health, social care or children's and young people's settings 
  • Promote communication in health, social care or children's and young people's settings
  • Promote equality and inclusion in health, social care or children's and young people's
  • Promote and implement health and safety in health and social care

You should be able to display a good level of communication skills, motivation and initiative, an ability to work as a member of a team as well as independently and be able to demonstrate good attention to detail.

Entry requirements

•A minimum of four or more GCSEs at grade A-C  These should include Maths and English.


You will be assessed in the workplace performing your normal routine duties. Assessment may be through observation, questioning, professional discussions and witness testimonies. Assignment work will be undertaken during your days attended at college.

Functional Skills guidance and support will also be undertaken during your time at College. You and your assessor will decide when you are ready to undertake assessment for these. You may be exempt from these if you have the necessary Maths & English entry requirements.

Future opportunities

If you perform well you may be offered a permanent post or you could apply for other posts available within the NHS e.g. Theatre Technician.

You may wish to study at a higher level such as a foundation degree in Health Practice or apply for an Operation Department Practitioner (OPD) Degree.
