Applied Science BTEC Extended Certificate (Level 3) at Bemrose School

Course description

This course is ideal for students who have an interest in science. It is suitable for students wishing to enter employment in the science sector such as the NHS or to progress to vocational qualifications such as Higher Nationals or other science related qualifications. It is also an appropriate progression route to higher level courses at university.

You will be taught in a variety of learning styles.  You will be expected to be responsible for your own learning and work with other members of the group as well as independtly including practicals.

Course content

This course comprises of 2 units, both of which are mandatory (360 GLH).

Unit 1 - Principles and Applications of Science 1 (Externally assessed):

Animal and Plant cells, tissues; atomic structure and bonding; chemical and physical  properties of substances related to their use; waves and their application in communication.

Summary of assessment: The exam paper will be split into 3 sections -  section A biology, B Chemistry and C Physics each worth 30 marks.

Unit 2 - Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques.

This unit introduces you to standard laboratory equipment and techniques, including titration, colorimetry, chromatography, calibration procedures and laboratory safety.

Entry requirements

The Level 3 BTEC Extended Certificate in Applied Science provides students with a range of of science and more general study skills that would be complementary to most learner programs.


Assessment is by portfolio of evidence moderated by the School and external verifiers.  This accounts for 50% of the content and the other 50% is assessed via an external assessment.
