Applied Science (Physiology) BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate at Durham Sixth Form Centre

Course description

Do you enjoy learning science in a practical way? Do you want to build up a science portfolio to complement other studies? This is a more vocational work-related qualification which aims to give learners the knowledge, understanding and skills that they need to prepare for employment.

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Physiology is the equivalent of one A-level. A strong foundation is laid in all aspects of science in the first year then there is a focus on physiology in the second year. If you would like to develop your scientific expertise by building up a portfolio of evidence and thrive on the practical application of knowledge, then this course is for you.

Course content

Year 1:

  • Principles and application of science (general science examination)
  • Practical scientific procedures and techniques (practical based assignments)

Year 2:

  • Scientific investigation skills (practical based unit with examination component)
  • Physiology and human body systems (coursework)

Entry requirements

This course is aimed at students who have normally achieved 2 grades C or above in GCSE Science, Additional Science or Applied Science, or students who have a BTEC Level 2 qualifications in Applied Science.

Future opportunities

The department has strong links with the NHS, and the science departments of Durham, Teesside and Newcastle Universites, making use of their facilities and expertise when relevant.Throughout the course, students will have the opportunity to engage with a range of guest speakers from industry and academia. The practical knowledge you acquire in this course and the ability to analyse data will be extremely useful, if you want to go on to study a degree for example in academic sciences, teaching, nursing, midwifery and social science.

    • Durham Sixth Form Centre is located in Durham City Centre next to Gala Square and Freeman’s Quay. We are a couple of minutes walk from both the bus station and the railway station. Our students enjoy having all of the city centre facilities, shops, restaurants, the city library, cinema and theatre on our doorstep. In the city itself, students find a host of lively cultural, social and educational advantages and facilities. The galleries, exhibitions, museums and book shops all play their part in enriching the student experience. A large public car-park is directly opposite and adjacent to Durham Sixth Form Centre’s main entrance.
