Product Design A Level at Don Valley School and Performing Arts College
This course is aimed at students who enjoy producing high quality drawings and 3D prototypes. It offers a fresh approach to design and technology. Students are given the opportunity to develop their creative, technical and practical skills through a series of product investigation, design and manufacturing activities. They are encouraged to become critical thinkers, to use ICT, CAD and CAM, and to explore sustainability issues within design. Students will also develop their awareness of the important contributions of designers from both the past and present.
Students will have the opportunity to choose either the Graphic Products or Resistant Materials route after enrolment
AS – Year One
- Unit 1 – Portfolio of creative skills (60% of total AS , 30% of total GCE mark) In the first year students will produce one portfolio with three distinct sections which will demonstrate their creativity and flair when investigating, designing and making products. This unit is internally set and marked by the centre and externally moderated by Edexcel.
- Unit 2 – Design and Technology in Practice( 40% of total AS marks,20% of total GCE mark) In this unit students will develop their knowledge and understanding of a wide range of materials, processes, industrial and commercial practices used in the field of design and technology. This unit will be assessed through a 1 hour 30 minute examination set and marked by Edexcel.
- Unit 3 – Designing for the Future (40% of total A2 marks, 20% of total GCE marks) In this unit students will develop their knowledge and understanding of a range of modern design and manufacturing practices, contemporary design issues, systems and control and ICT technologies. This unit culminates in a 2-hour examination paper set and marked by Edexcel.
- Unit 4 – Commercial Design (60% of total A2 marks, 30% of total GCE marks) In this unit students are given the opportunity to apply the skills they have acquired and developed throughout this course of study, to design and make a commercially viable product of their choice. This unit is internally set and marked by the centre and externally moderated by Edexcel. Students must follow the full AS course before progressing to A2.
A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade C or better. No more than two applied courses can count towards this total and each applied course counted has the equivalence of only one GCSE, regardless of its nominal size. In addition, students must achieve the specific entry requirements which may apply to this course.
The course will provide a sound grounding for those wishing to pursue a career in the design or manufacturing industries.
