A Level Music at Ilfracombe Academy

Course description

The AS GCE is both a ‘standalone’ qualification and also the first half of the corresponding Advanced GCE, made up of three mandatory units: performing music, composing music and historical study in music. Together these units form 50% of the corresponding six unit Advanced GCE. The AS is suitable for students who wish to proceed further in their study of music and for those whose interest is recreational.

The Advanced GCE is made up of the three AS units and three further units at A2, building upon the foundations laid in Performing, Composing and Listening in the AS course. They develop students’ skills to a level appropriate for entry to courses of study in music in higher education and provide access to a range of music-related employment, as well as offering an informed basis for a life-long appreciation and enjoyment of music.

Students should be able to perform to a standard of at least Grade V for AS, Grade VII or VIII for A2 and Grade V Theory knowledge is essential.
