History A Level at Lymm High Voluntary Controlled School

Course description

AS History/ A-Level first year – Students will study ‘In Search of the American Dream: The USA, 1917-96.’ This topic is a breadth study of American History and will encompass topics such as America during the First World War, the economic boom as well as the development of the Civil Rights Movement and different leadership challenges and styles of Presidents from the years study. Students will also study ‘South Africa, 1948-94: From Apartheid State to ‘Rainbow Nation’. This will incorporate a study of political activism in South Africa during Apartheid, the aims of Apartheid and the creation of a democratic, equal state when Apartheid ended in 1994.

A-Level Year 2 – Students will study England, 1509-1603:Authority, Nation and Religion, which looks key political, social and economic features of Tudor England from the accession of Henry VIII to the death of Elizabeth I, an era of decisive change in the state and church. Students will also complete a historical study on the Arab-Israeli. (see existing information in prospectus).

Entry requirements

AS History will be offered to any student achieving a grade of A*-C in GCSE History or A*-C in a Humanities Subject and English Language if they did not study GCSE History. If they wish to continue the course at A-Level they will need to show commitment to the course throughout the first year and a grade A-C in their AS examination in the Summer. For those students wanting to complete the full A-Level they will need to achieve an A*-B in GCSE History.


Paper 1 – Study in breadth with historical interpretations, 2hours 15minutes (60 marks)

Paper 2 – Study in Depth, 1hour 30minutes (40 marks)

Paper 3 – A-Level Aspects in breadth with aspects in depth, 2hours 15minutes
