Progression to Hairdressing at West Suffolk College
This is a suitable course for learners who seek to follow a career within the hairdressing industry in an up-to-date and well-equipped salon environment. The programme offers training and support for shampooing, conditioning, plaiting and twisting using basic techniques, blow drying, Health and Safety, teamwork, and working closely with the public and fellow colleagues. An enrichment programme is offered to further enhance skills and enjoyment. This includes long hair workshop, manicure, nail enhancements, trips to trade shows and hairdressing competitions.
The timetabled sessions cover approximately three days per week, from 9.15am until 5.00pm. Learners are recommended to seek work experience within an external salon for one day per week to give additional experience and support toward their hairdressing skills.
The course follows a carefully designed programme covering all the skills involved in assisting in the hairdressing salon. Candidates will assist Level 2 learners in the In Vogue Salon, which operates as a commercial business with learners working on members of the public. The length of the course will vary with each individual candidate, and will be dependent upon progress, e.g. students may be able to progress into classes that focus on skills in the last term.
Learners will be given expert theory and practical tuition in units such as Health and Safety, developing effective working relationships, shampoo and condition hair, blow drying, assisting with hair colour services and preparation for hairdressing services and maintaining work areas and plaiting and twisting. All students are required to attend a directed study session weekly. All students without a GCSE C grade will be required to attend English and Maths classes with a view to achieve their GCSE. As part of their programme students will be required to complete work related experience as directed by your Course Director.
Any student aged 16 to 19 who does not hold a GCSE A* to C (9 to 4 on the new grading structure) or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English by age 16 will need to continue to study these subjects in each academic year.
Entry is by interview. The course requires 2 GCSEs (English and Mathematics) at grade E (2) or above.
Some of the products used in the hairdressing and beauty industry contain nuts and therefore this occupation may not be suitable for those people with an allergy to nuts.
This course is designed to introduce the foundation skills in hairdressing to enable progression onto Level 2 in hairdressing and barbering.
The programme covers the theory and practical skills needed to progress onto the Level 2 Diploma qualification, with the Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Hairdressing following on for those learners who wish to advance themselves still further. Learners can aspire to employment in hairdressing as stylist/technician, barbering, hairdressing product manufacturer representative.
Level 1 is also a platform to enable students to progress onto a Level 2 apprenticeship.
