Public Services BTEC First Level 2 Extended Certificate/Diploma at Exeter College
This course allows you to develop the essential knowledge, understanding and skills common for a range of Public Services such as Police, Fire,
Ambulance, Armed Forces, Prison Services, Customs and Excise, and wider Community Services (such as Probation and Social Services).
The BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Public Services aims to help you develop an understanding of the environment in which the Public Services operate. Through your studies you will develop an understanding of Public Service job roles; investigate the differences between Public Service organisations; identify the levels of fitness required for each service, develop the skills and qualities required by Public Service employees and gain an opportunity to interact with personnel from a variety of Public Service organisations.
You will receive formal lecture input, with a variety of teaching methods including group work, individual presentations, role plays and research as well as input from staff currently employed in the Public Services

- Working Skills in the Public Service Sector
- Citizenship, Society and the Public Services
- Sport and Recreation in the Public Services
- Crime and its Effects on Society and Individuals
- Land Navigation by Map and Compass
- Volunteering in the Public Services
- Multi-day Expedition Experience
As part of your course you will be required to re-sit GCSE English or maths to enable you to achieve a grade C or above. Functional Skills will also be discussed at your interview.
You need four GCSEs at Grade D or above including English and Maths, and three GCSEs at Grade E or above. Internal applicants will also need a supporting reference from their former tutor.
Assessment is continuous through coursework and some assessment will be conducted through controlled assessments. GCSE English, Maths and Functional Skills are externally tested. You will also be required to complete a residential programme as part of your course.
You will need some equipment for outdoor pursuits (walking boots, waterproofs, rucksack, etc.) some of which you may be able to borrow from the faculty. There is a one-off fee of £200 which covers most of the costs for residentials and visits. For students/families on a low income financial help may be available.
This course provides a sound basis for the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Public Services or for other Advanced level courses if you achieve a Level 2 Extended Certificate MP profile. Alternatively, you may choose to progress into employment or take a training placement.
