Mathematics A-Level at Whitefield School

Course description

This AQA course aims at developing students' understanding of mathematical reasoning, enabling them to apply mathematics and recognise its significance to other disciplines. The syllabus is divided into six units - four core (pure), one mechanics and one statistics.

AS: Students study Core 1, Core 2 and Statistics 1 in the first year of the course and Core 3, Core 4 and Mechanics 1 in the second year. Examinations on each of the units are written in June. The assessment endeavours to test students' ability to recall, apply and interpret mathematical knowledge and techniques; recognise and apply suitable mathematical methods in a logical and clear form; and make logical deductions, organise, interpret and present information accurately in written, tabular, graphical and diagrammatic form.

Entry requirements

In order to study Mathematics A level, students must achieve at least 5 A* to C grades at GCSE level. This should include at least an A*/A or high B grade in Mathematics.


Each module is assessed by a written exam which takes place in June of the academic year. Internal assessments are carried out each half term. Students can achieve an A-E grade at AS Level and A*-E at A2 Level. Students follow the AQA Maths GCE syllabus.

Future opportunities

Mathematics is a highly regarded traditional subject for entry into higher education. It is particularly valuable for careers across all areas of finance, engineering, teaching and analytical based careers.
