AS/A2 Level World Development at Burton and South Derbyshire College

Course description

The AS course includes the study of two main themes:- Theme One: Development, Resources & Global Citizenship. This covers the idea that people have basic needs for survival and in order to fulfil them we make demands on the environment. The issue is how do we reconcile these demands and ensure sustainable development. Theme Two: Poverty and Inequality. We look at definitions and measurements of poverty in both the developed and the developing world. In addition we look at how poverty affects groups and policies to alleviate poverty.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade C or above (one of which must be English)

A2 Level At A2 there is a compulsory unit on Perspectives and Development. We look at how development can be defined and measured and link these to political ideologies Optional units are: • Economic Development – We look at Trade, Globalisation and Aid Political Development – looking at political participation, conflict, national and regional government. • Social Development – looking at population issues, the role of women, education, health, migration and cultural and religious diversity.
