Textiles/Fashion A Level at St Ivo School
This course aims to develop: • Intellectual, imaginative, creative and intuitive powers • Investigative, analytical, experimental, practical, technical and expressive skills • Aesthetic understanding and critical judgment • Knowledge and understanding of fashion and textiles; both the contemporary and the historical.
The A level Textiles course consists of two components, both teacher assessed and externally moderated. Component 1 Title: Personal Investigation Component 2 Title: Externally Set Assignment.
Entry to St Ivo Sixth Form is dependent on attitude to learning and behaviour as well as examination performance. This is set out in a separate document called “Sixth Form Entry Requirements” which is available on the school website. Some subjects will also have subject specific requirements.
It is advantageous to be able to work with a sewing machine at home, but it is not essential. However, it is very important to be equipped with a box of textile tools and materials. Some expenditure will also be required for the purchase of sketch books and printing costs.
Students wishing to study textile design and fashion in higher education or ultimately pursue a career in art and design or a related field would usually progress to an art foundation course. However, there are some students who prefer to take direct entry into university. There are many career opportunities in art and design and therefore it would be advisable to seek proper professional careers advice. An A level in textile design is excellent preparation for higher education courses in subjects such as Fashion Design, Textiles, Interior Design, Fine Art, Illustration, Photography etc.
