Foundation Study Programme at Wiltshire College

Course description

The Foundation Studies programme has been designed for learners who have not yet achieved the grades for entry onto a vocational programme, those unsure of what they want to do and would like to experience some 'tasters', those that have barriers to learning or have been out of education for a period of time, as well as those with Special Educational Needs or complex Learning Difficulties and or Disabilities.

The programme aims to prepare young people for one or more of the following pathways:

  • Education - access onto further study, typically a vocational college course at Level 1 or Level 2
  • Employment - access to paid or supported employment as well as voluntary work
  • Transition to Adulthood - developing greater independence, improved health and wellbeing and involvement in social activities

Course content

You will be on an individualised study programme. Your learning will be designed around your needs and your personal outcome. Study programmes are made up of lots of different options that, when put together, aim to give you a well-rounded education and get you ready for work and life.

All students will take part in maths and English classes, 'core study' lessons and regular tutorials. The core study lessons and one-to-one tutorials will add up to 6 hours of study.

Additional items such as speech and language therapy can be built into your core study time.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for the Foundation Studies Programme. Prospective learners will be asked to come for an informal interview where possible, in order for the college to determine the best pathway for you based on your skills and experience.

Assessment

Full-time courses are 16 hours per week which generally consist of 3 full days from 9am - 4.30pm however if 3 days is too much, we can always look at your timetable by accessing our 'open doors' programme where you can access community activities on the days you are not in college.

Some students can study up to 5 days per week which may not always be full days of study. We will make a decision based on what best suits your individual learning needs and your personal outcome when we meet you.
