Music A Level at Saint Benedict, A Catholic Voluntary Academy

Course description


AS Unit 1 - Performing 30%

·         You can perform a solo and/or ensemble in any style.

·         Performance time is between 5 & 6 minutes and it is performed in one go.

·         Standard- Grade 5 and above.

AS Unit 2 –Composing 30%

·         Three minute piece

·         Choice of 4 topics:     
 1) Composing expressively

                 2) Variation structure

                 3) Structure in vocal music

                 4) Vocal Music- text context and texture.

AS Unit 3 - Developing Musical Understanding 40%

Candidates will study selections of set works from two categories:

·         Instrumental Music

·         Vocal Music


A2 Unit 4 - Extended Performance 30%

Perform as a soloist and/or as part of an ensemble for between 12 to 15 minutes. Music can be in any style, but must be a balanced programme. The standard is equivalent to Associated Board Grade 6


A2 Unit 5 - Composition and Technical Study 30%

Composition: This further develops student’s compositional skills, leading to the creation of a final three minute piece in response to a chosen brief published by the board in September.





Technical study: This contains the opening bars of three pieces of music. Students will complete these openings in a specified style.


A2 Unit 6 - Further Musical Understanding 40%

2 hour examination based on a range of set works which will be different to those studied at AS.

Entry requirements

All Level 3 students must have 5 separate GCSE passes (A*-C), including English Language and Maths.  

Grade 5 on an instrument OR Grade B in Music OR Level 2 Merit in Music Technology
