Technical Theatre - Sound, Lighting, Set and Stage, Management Extended Diploma at Stoke on Trent College

Course description

During the course you will learn about and take various roles within the technical team for a production and will ultimately take responsibility for different areas of production. This can include: stage management, lighting, sound scenic construction and painting, prop making, design, model making, costume and special effects. Throughout the course teaching is through a combination of taught classroom based sessions and practical sessions, which lead to practical hands-on experience of running a show.

Course content

This popular and exciting course will build skills and knowledge in all aspects of Technical Theatre. Through practical projects you will develop and explore skills in stage design, lighting, stage management, prop and model making, scenic painting and construction. These will prepare you for the staging of full scale performances in our own theatre space, at the end of each academic year. Our projects focus on learning and developing techniques for designing and building, as well as organisational and communication skills for your own study and working with others. You will also assist with selected events outside of the theatre to gain valuable experience working to deadlines.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs grade A*-C (new grade 4 in English/Maths), Level 2 Diploma, appropriate NVQ Level 2 or Intermediate qualification, including a Grade C in English or Functional Skills Level 2 in English. You will have a pre-induction interview/assessment to make sure this is the right level for you.


The course is assessed through internally devised and assessed units which will be moderated by the awarding body.

Future opportunities

This qualification will provide you with the required ability to apply for Higher Education courses in related areas or to enter employment.

Functional Skills will form an important part of your course; they are skills that we use and need within our study, work and everyday life. They fit mainly into three categories: English, Maths and Information Technology. We have a wide range of high quality specialised facilities here including; a theatre, dance studio, recording studio, lighting, sound desks and equipment, and a creative workshop which you will experience during your study. These in turn will allow you to prepare fully for progression of study in Production Arts, or enter employment in the industry.
