Course description

History at A-Level is a highly stimulating and rewarding experience which offers a fantastic opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge and understanding of British and European History. Through studying the past, students arrive at a far better understanding of present day issues in the modern world.

History also enables students to develop many of the key skills identified by both University Admissions tutors and the country’s leading employers as vital to academic success and career progression. These include independent research, analytical communication and problem-solving skills. Above all, A Level History enhances students’ ability to become life-long learners by not only encouraging continual reflection of their own performance, but also through stressing the importance of working responsibly with others.

Course content

The course covers Social, Economic and Political change and how people in Britain and the USA have been affected by change in the short and long term. Through source investigation, debate/discussion, presentations and independent enquiry students will acquire excellent historical skills in order to assess the significance of events, individuals, beliefs and movements from that particular time. They will develop their ability to reach substantiated judgments on key questions in history and how to construct an effective balanced argument. The A level course for Y13 will have a breadth study of an significant historical development over a 100 year period, a depth study of a major historical change and a controlled assessment section.

Entry requirements

Grade C in English, and a History GCSE Grade C is preferable.

History is thriving at A-Level because it gives students the opportunity to understand the big issues behind today’s headlines, to ask questions and to express their opinions in a variety of ways. If students enjoy active learning through group work, debates, & problem-solving scenarios, they will certainly enjoy History at this level. It also complements many other subjects such as English, Geography, Media, Psychology, Philosophy and even Business Studies.

AS Level

  • Unit 1: Stuart Britiain and the crisis of Monarchy 1603- 1702
    1½ hour exam
  • Unit 2: Revoloution and Dictatorship:Russia, 1917-1929
    1½ hour exam

A Level

Worth 20% of the A level mark and may be on the tudors

Future opportunities

A-Level History is excellent preparation for the further study of History and indeed many other subjects at degree level. The skills required are very much in demand in education, management and business. As such, History is an excellent foundation for a number of popular careers - Journalism, Law, Business, Teaching, Civil Service, Police Force, Accountancy to name but a few!!
