Physics A Level at Bitterne Park School

Course description

Advancing Physics is an innovative AS GCE course, reflecting physics as it is used and practiced today.

The course is split into 6 modules. Teaching of practical skills and data analysis are integrated with the theoretical topics and are covered in modules 1 and 2. Modules 1-4 constitute the stand alone AS level qualification, which is examined in 2 written papers. Modules1-6, combined with a practical endorsement, constitute the full A-Level which is examined in 3 written papers.

The AS topics include imaging, signalling, sensing, mechanical properties of materials, waves and quantum behaviour, space time and motion. At A level pupils will study space, relativity, properties of matter, electromagnetism and particle physics.

The course provided includes significant maths-based content.

Why this course

A-level Physics provides a challenging and practical opportunity to study in greater depth topics from GCSE physics as well as new areas, including those linked to the development of new technologies. Physics is regarded by Russell Group Universities as a ‘facilitating subject’ which leads to a wider range of degree choices.

Entry requirements

5 GCSE grade C’s or above, including English, Maths (preferably an A or above), and either:
