Product Design: 3D Design A Level at Princes Risborough School

Course description

This course is suited to students who have shown a strong interest in the world of Design at GCSE level and enjoy the challenge of problem solving. Students will gain a positive experience of working in Design from this course and because there is a practical base to all the project work, a willingness to develop their making skills would also be important.

Successful students in the subject could use this qualification to study Design at a higher level or take up a job opportunity in the Design world in the fields of Architecture, Furniture Design, Engineering and Product Design.

Area of Study:

Students complete design projects leading to 3D end products for both AS and A2. There is a written paper for both AS and A2 the topics of study include – Materials and Components, Design and Market Influences and Process and Manufacture.

Entry requirements

Standard 6th Form entry requirements (5 or more A*-C grade passes at GCSE including English Language and Mathematics), plus C grade or above in DT Product Design, Food or Textiles. Students who have a GCSE in Textiles or Food should be aware that their written folder skills are transferable but the theory and practical skills are specific to Product Design and they should be prepared for a ‘steep learning curve’.
