BTEC Sport (Exercise and Fitness) First Diploma at Isleworth & Syon School for Boys
The BTEC First Diploma consists of 6 modules including the Junior Sport Leader Award (JSLA). The JSLA course aims to give students the confidence to lead or assist in the delivery of sport to young people. Students learn the skills needed to deal with large or small groups and most importantly to make sport fun! Students also get the opportunity to visit local Primary Schools and assist in the running of some of Hounslow’s major primary events. The two other modules completed in the first half of the year are Health and Safety in Sport and The Body in Sport. The Health and Safety in Sport module consists of a number of in-class tasks where students must perform Risk Assessments, and complete a First Aid award. The Body in Sport module looks at how the body works during sport. Students look at the heart, lungs, muscles and bones and how they adapt during physical exercise. Assessment is in a variety of forms with poster-presentation or podcast to name but two. The second half of the course sees the introduction of three more modules; these are Practical Sport, The Sports Industry and Preparation for Sport. Practical Sport looks at a student’s ability to analyse and improve their own performance in two sports. Students also get the opportunity to take part in a vast range of activities. Assessment for this module is through a number of observation tasks, and practical sports assessment. The Sports Industry module helps student to understand the massive impact major companies have upon our leisure time. Preparation for sport involves students in the processes that elite athletes go through to reach the top. Assessment comes in the form of a video presentation and written assignment.
