Government and Politics A Level at Drapers' Academy

Course description

Government and Politics is around us all the time; it affects all of our lives daily from the decision making processes about your health and education to whether the street lights are working and the roads are clean.

We welcome students onto the course who have a thirst for ideas and want to understand how government works in the UK and USA. This is an excellent choice of A level for candidates who wish to continue onto higher education at University.

Course content

Unit 1: People and Politics
In this unit you will learn about democracy and participation, the ideas and policies of political parties, how elections work in the UK and alternatives to this, along with the role of pressure groups in the political system.

Unit 2: Governing the UK
This is an introduction to the processes of government in the UK. You will study Parliament, the Prime Minister and Cabinet, the Constitution and the Judiciary.

Unit 3: Representative Processes in the USA
Here you will learn about political processes in the USA and evaluate them in terms of participation and full democracy

Unit 4: Governing the USA
This topic develops your understanding of the institutional framework of US government; you will study the Constitution, the Presidency, Supreme Court and Congress.

Entry requirements

Students need to achieve a B at GCSE Chemistry and Maths or a B in core and additional Science.
