Childcare and Education CACHE Technical Certificate at Francis Combe Academy

Course description

This qualification has been designed for learners who want to work in early years childcare and education. It also enables learners who wish to progress to Higher Education to study the Certificate alongside another qualification in a different subject area. 

This qualification is a Tech Level qualification on the Department for Education's 16-19 2018 performance tables. Tech Level qualifications are for learners who wish to specialize In a technical occupation, in the case of the Technical Level 3 Certificate in Childcare and Education, childcare. It is supported by the Professional Association for Childcare and Early Years and Higher Education institutions.

The Certificate Is part of a suite of qualifications (Award, Certificate and Diploma in Childcare and Education). The Certificate provides learners with a broad foundation of knowledge and skills within early years childcare and education in preparation for progression to the Diploma. It also enables learners to progress to Higher Education (if studied alongside another qualification). 

Course content

This Certificate Is comprised of 7 mandatory units which cover the following key subject areas: 

  • Child development from conception to 7 years
  • Children's health and well-being
  • Providing safe environments for children
  • Child health
  • Play and learning
  • Children's additional needs
  • Observation, assessment and planning. 

Entry requirements

General entry requirement for a 2 year programme of vocational courses is a mostly C/D grade profile at GCSE.


Completion of this qualification is achieved through a mixture of classroom based learning and experience In a Real Work Environment. You will be assessed through 7 units of coursework and one external examination. 

Future opportunities

Learners can progress into various supervised job roles in the statutory, voluntary or private sectors, such as (this list Is not exhaustive): 

  • Practitioner In day nurseries
  • Practitioner in nursery schools
  • Practitioner In reception classes in primary schools
  • Pre-school worker
  • Home based childcarer
  • Nanny.

  • BSC (Hons) Nursing
  • BA (Hons) Professional Practice
  • BA (Hons) Working with Children, Young People and Families 

You may wish to progress onto a childcare care related apprenticeship.

Further information

This course will involve one day  per week of placements within  a range of childcare settings.
