Applied Science - BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma (90 Credit Diploma Route) at Harrow College

Course description

This is a two year, full time programme for students who want to study applied sciences. The course will appeal to those who:

  • Have a keen interest all aspects of science
  • Enjoy studying a subject that is relevant to their own lives and experiences
  • Want to find out more about science through personal investigations
  • Want the opportunity to carry out practical work as well as class work
  • Are interested in developing an understanding of science and how to solve scientific problems
  • Want to study a course that is active and enjoyable
  • Want to move on to a related career or higher education course. The course has an equivalence to a 3 A level programme.

Course content

A wide range of scientific disciplines including Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths. In year 2 there is likely to be an option to study a Free Standing Mathematics Unit, which currently attracts UCAS points.

Through classroom teaching, practical activities, group work, research and educational visits.


Entry requirements

Minimum of 4 GCSE grades A* - C, including 2 in Science, English and Maths, or a Merit at BTEC First Applied Science.


This is a 100% coursework based course, comprising of 10 units in Year 1 and 9 units in Year 2. Each unit is assessed by assignments which are graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction. Each unit is then given a grade, with a final grade of Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction* awarded for the overall qualification.

Financial information

Fees payable are shown above or in the Prospectus for Adult Learners. Details of the concessions available and who may qualify are shown on the fees page on the web site and in the Prospectus for Adult Learners. If the College cancels a course before it starts you will be given a full refund. If a course closes for any reason the fees for the remaining part of the course will be refunded. If the college receives a written notice of withdrawal from you at least three working days before a course starts you will receive a refund of the tuition fees. (If you enrol within the three days prior to the start of the course you will not be entitled to a refund). All registration and examination fees are non-refundable. Residential and materials fees will only be refunded in exceptional circumstances.

Future opportunities

Students can go on to study a Science, Applied Science or Engineering subject at university. Alternatively, students may choose to go straight into employment in areas such as Forensic Science, Quality Control, Environmental Protection or Health and Safety.
