Mathematics A level at Cannock Chase High School
Maths is an amazing subject to study and a real bonus to have at this level. If you are willing to work hard and persevere, you can succeed at A Level Mathematics. You will need to have a good understanding of the Maths covered at GCSE, and be comfortable recalling previous skills and knowledge.
The course is split into two years to give the AS qualification in Year 12, leading onto the A2 in Year 13. Mathematics is one of the last subjects to be reformed, and students will be studying the ‘old-style’ A Level for the entirety of their course. The modules studied in both years are given below:
Year 12 (AS level)
- Core 1
- Core 2
- Statistics 1
Year 13 (A2 level)
- Core 3
- Core 4
- Mechanics 1
Grade B or above in GCSE Maths (covering all the higher content)
There are many reasons why people choose to study A Level Mathematics. Primarily, it may be a requirement for what you aim to study at university and a good grade at A Level in Mathematics can boost your application. Another reason - although it should never be the primary incentive - is that people with A Level Mathematics, on average, earn a higher salary than those without. Most importantly however, if you enjoy your lessons and are developing a love for the subject then try it.
